Floor-to-ceiling bookcases, bright red accents, and minimalist designs can be spotted throughout many Spanish homes, especially in Mediterranean areas like Andalusia and Barcelona. While most of us won’t be moving to a Spanish home anytime soon, there are still plenty of ways to incorporate their easygoing style into our own lives. These five tips to effortlessly nail Spanish style in your home will help you do just that.
1) Combine Contrasting Colors
If you’re not sure where to start, head to the next level of contrast. You’ll want something bright and bold, such as turquoise or yellow-gold. Be cautious when combining a lighter color with a darker one though – like cream with teal – because they may get muddled and less effective if they are too close together on the spectrum. When choosing accessories or items for your home, keep one color at the forefront of your mind and add other items that pop against it.
2) Consider Different Textures
If you’re looking for something that’s different from your regular, then natural elements such as stone, wood, and clay could be the way to go. If you have a high-pitched roof, consider adding chimneys for an instant wow factor. And if your home doesn’t have a backyard, remember to include a herb garden on the ground floor! There are plenty of DIY projects such as rattan furniture out there to make this part of your house feel like it has its own outdoor space. One option is a hammock – perfect for those lazy afternoons!
You might also try incorporating plants or trees – anything that will provide both a focal point and balance to your design. For example, an olive tree adds Mediterranean character to any outdoor space; whilst fruit trees can give you an abundance of fresh produce year round!
A final idea is constructing a little seating area or even just one or two chairs; perfect for morning coffee or reading during the evening hours.
3) In Living Rooms, Add an Accent Wall
I love adding an accent wall as the focal point of the room and playing around with complementary colors. You can add a certain zing to your space without having anything on display or change things up by going for lighter or darker shades of the same color family. Make sure that you take your time when picking out paint because it’s probably not something you’ll want to change soon!
That being said, don’t be afraid to go bold if that’s what feels right for you. If there are any naysayers who don’t get it, let them know how good it feels to have some bright pops of color instead of all those moody blues and grays!
4) Add Character with Unique Items
Emma didn’t know much about fashion, but she loved the feel of that flimsy Spanish dress as it swayed in the breeze. When she came home, she couldn’t get it out of her head. She wanted that breezy feeling around her all the time. She wanted to be able to walk into any room and feel like she could conquer anything. So Emma decided it was time for a change.
The first thing she did was take down all of her family photos and put up tapestries instead. Next, she bought some driftwood from the beach to add an extra element of nature to the mix. To top it off, she filled up several glass jars with candles from local stores in different shapes and sizes-then took them outside so they could smell better!
5) Use Patterned Furniture Pieces
Chances are if you haven’t come across this style before, it’s because it doesn’t follow typical trends. But just because something is less well-known doesn’t mean it can’t be versatile, fresh, and fabulous. Patterned furniture pieces are a great way to bring some eye-catching flair into your home without going too far outside of the box.
