Our Favorite Small, Cool Homes of 2016

Whether it’s because of skyrocketing rent or the search for the perfect spot, more and more people are downsizing to smaller living spaces. In fact, over the past few years, downsizing has become increasingly popular among professionals and young adults who have moved into micro-apartments—sometimes just one room! What’s cool about these homes is that they aren’t just tiny; they boast ingenious design that makes each square foot count. Here are our favorite small, cool homes of 2016!

In the Pacific Northwest

There’s something about the Pacific Northwest that just begs for small, cool homes. Maybe it’s the damp, misty air or the evergreen trees that make us feel like we’re living in a fairy tale. Whatever the reason, we love small homes here in the PNW. So much so that this is our favorite region to post on. In Texas

Here in Texas, we love our small, cool homes! And this year, we saw some amazing examples of cool, small homes from all over the state. From a tiny home on wheels to a cozy cabin in the woods, these homes are sure to inspire anyone looking to downsize or live more simply. We can’t wait to see what small, cool homes 2017 has in store for us!

In Minnesota

We had another great year in Minnesota, with some amazing small, cool homes being built throughout the state. We’re excited to share our favorites with you today! These are homes that were either recently completed or have been announced and will be completed soon – they are houses we can’t wait to see people move into and love as much as we do. These are by no means all of the new small, cool houses we loved this year – these just happen to be our favorites for their mix of beautiful design and use of space, location in Minnesota, and inspiring stories behind them.

In California

Small homes are big in California! In 2016, we saw an uptick in the number of small, cool homes being built and sold in the Golden State. Whether it’s due to the rising cost of living or a desire to downsize, more and more Californians are opting for smaller spaces. In Louisiana

From the bayous of Louisiana to the mountains of Colorado, we’ve seen some amazing small homes this year. But which ones were our favorites? Here are the top five small, cool homes of 2016 as chosen by Tiny House Talk readers:

The Row House on a Bed and Breakfast Lot: A former slave cabin was relocated to Lottie Mae’s bed and breakfast in Baton Rouge where it now houses guests. Located in the historic Blacksmith Shop district, it’s the perfect home for someone who likes to be near everything but doesn’t want to live in an apartment or townhome.

In Washington DC
